This past weekend at D23 Disney fans were given a lot of information about some big projects that are in the works at Disney. Many of us were expecting to hear a lot about blue sky dream projects that we wouldn’t see come to life much like the Mary Poppins ride over at EPCOT that got scratched. Disney however gave us a list of projects that Josh D’Amaro reported already have ground moving.
One of the biggest projects noted was the expansion of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World. This will be the largest expansion this park has ever seen. It starts off with Disney bringing the charm of our Western national parks to the Magic Kingdom through a brand-new story inspired by Pixar Animations Studios’ “Cars.” This new land will include two brand new rides: one rugged terrain rally race and another family friendly attraction.
To make way for this new land the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be closed, and that area will be re-imagined into this new “Cars” themed land.
The area Disney is referring to as Beyond Big Thunder Mountain will be home to what fans have been begging for, for as long as this writer can remember a land dedicated to our favorite Disney Villains. This land will be home to two major attractions, dining and shopping. The concept art appears to show a Maleficent themed coaster that is sure to excite!
Construction on the new “Cars” themed expansion is scheduled to begin in 2025. The Villains Land construction is listed as starting “soon.”
